The Story

Alonzo Mourning and Earvin “Magic” Johnson created ZO & MAGIC’S 8-BALL CHALLENGE as an annual fundraiser to support the mission of Alonzo Mourning Charities and the Magic Johnson Foundation. This upscale, intimate, fun and exciting event for the Who’s Who of the industry allows celebrities and athletes to kick-back and enjoy themselves as they prepare to usher in the weekend of festivities. Now entering year five, ZO & MAGIC'S 8-BALL CHALLENGE has become the most anticipated event of all-star weekend.

How did it all start?

Alonzo Mourning had the idea to create a new and exciting event during All-Star Weekend that would stand apart from the promoter parties, corporate meet and greets and the numerous sports activities. He wanted an event for the ‘insiders’- not just the athletes but also for the people who work with them. Most of all, he wanted everyone to have a great time while raising funds for a great cause.

A billiards fanatic and competitive to the core, Mourning decided that this new event would be a tournament. A tournament with great prizes that would create a year-to-year anticipation of match ups and battles on the quest for “bragging rights.”

With over 25 years in and around the NBA, Legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson was also ready to bring something new and exciting to the All-Star Weekend. Known for his engaging personality and competitive drive, Johnson saw the 8-Ball Challenge as the perfect opportunity to engage friends and business partners in an evening of fun and competition… and more importantly, as a means to raise funds to support much needed programs and services that benefit the community.

This distinguished partnership brings together two of the most accomplished and respected athletes in the world. Through their personal and professional lives, Alonzo and Earvin have demonstrated incredible commitment and perseverance not only to the game but also to the community.
